The last 15 years in a nutshell: After leaving Hogwarts, Briony went back to Amesbury to help her grandmother tend to the family bakery. She inherited the bakery at 21 after her grandmother died. Deciding it would be best to leave the bakery in more capable hands, Briony sold it to her cousin, Christopher and used the money to travel. She met Quinn in Vancouver after a year traveling across Europe and Canada. Quinn (34 at the time) was a famous chef. He asked Briony to move with him to New York, and she did. They got married a year later. Quinn helped Briony open her first restaurant in London. After two years of marriage, Quinn asked Briony for a divorce. Briony, who had made quite a name for herself (thanks largely to his influence and network), agreed to the divorce under and stayed in New York to open a couple of restaurants herself. Briony lived in New York for three years before deciding to sell one of the restaurants to a friend and move back to London. She met Gala at a friend’s wedding in Ottawa. Gala was a graduate student at Oxford. They travelled to Spain together and stayed there for an entire summer while Gala finished her dissertation. When they returned, Briony asked Gala to marry her. They married quickly, and Briony continued to travel back and forward between New York and London for her business. Gala grew tired of what she felt was an unfair arrangement. And tired of arguing and feeling like she was being asked to pick between her wife and her career, Briony asked her to leave. Prior to coming to Abby’s wedding, Briony had spent a week at a spiritual retreat in Bali. In didn’t really help. Instead, she met a guy named Raul, from Colombia, and the two of them checked out a day earlier and went on a 24-hour bender along the coast. She came back a bit lost and exhausted from Bali. The truth was that Quinn had given her direction and Gala had attempted to give her stability. But without either of them, she was the same old directionless Briony Lewis.

What keeps them up at night? Briony’s constantly punishing herself for walking out on her family. She tried to acclimate into a muggle life, but the strong pull of her family’s long-standing legacy in the magical world often reached her, making her resent them a little. There are a few people she’s been able to keep in touch with, like her cousin, Christopher, and her friends, Abigail, Bella and Kronos.

Reasons why Briony distanced herself from the magical world: Briony was never really close to her family. Her father was murdered by her uncle before she was born, and her mother ran away with a wizard from Bulgaria months before Briony’s sixteenth birthday. Her father’s side of the family tried really hard to get Briony to be a part of their inner circle, but their inclinations for the dark arts were too much for Briony’s liking. Instead, she chose a simple life alongside her grandmother, aunts and cousins. Of course, them all being witches and wizards, proved a bit overwhelming for Briony, who resented magic for how it tore her family apart. As soon as she finished Hogwarts, she vowed not to use magic, banishing her wand to some forgotten corner in her grandmother’s attic.
